PTSD Checklist for DSM V (PCL-5)

CPP Cohort 4

The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5)* is a self-report measure for adult caregivers.  Domains assessed include DSM-5 PTSD symptom categories B-E for adults (i.e., intrusion, avoidance, negative alterations in cognitions and mood, and alterations in arousal and reactivity) and probable diagnosis level.

Descriptive Analyses: Pre- and post-treatment assessment measure means, standard deviations, and standard errors for each subscale of the PCL-5 are listed in the table below, as well as the range of possible scores and the probably clinically significant range for each subscale.

PCL-5 Subscales: Descriptive Statistics

Repeated Measures Analyses: Paired samples t-tests were conducted to examine pre-post group mean differences on the PCL-5 subscales and Overall Diagnosis Level.  Analyses showed statistically significant improvement in the Intrusion Symptoms subscale, but they did not show statistically significant change in the other subscales (Avoidance Symptoms, Negative Alterations in Cognitions and Mood, and Alterations in Arousal and Reactivity) or the Overall Diagnosis Level.

PCL-5: Pre-Post Treatment Mean Total Score

Individual Clinically-Significant Change:

At pre-treatment, 7 clients had PCL-5 Overall diagnosis Level scores at or above the cutoff score for probable clinical significance of 38.  Of note, 6 of these 7 clients were missing the PCL-5 Overall Diagnosis Level score at post-treatment.  Analysis of the client with post-treatment data showed that the PCL–5 Overall Diagnosis Level score for 0 of the 1 client (0%) decreased to non-probable levels of clinical significance by post-treatment.

Individual clinically significant change was not able to be determined for the PCL-5 subscales of Intrusion Symptoms, Avoidance Symptoms, Negative Alterations in Cognitions and Mood, and Alterations in Arousal and Reactivity because clinical cutoffs are not yet available for analysis of this data.
